Abstract

Abstraction ahhhh!! Abstraction the hardest of all, the painting whereby the viewer says my four year old could do that. Oh to paint with the confidence and carefree attitude and abandon of a four year old I wish! I find abstraction, the letting go the most difficult of all categories in which I indulge myself when painting, but I must admit abstraction can be the most rewarding when or if I actually catch one from the soul.

Architecture

I have been practicing architecture as for over forty years now, I am very grateful for the support my main profession has afforded me in terms of the resources that being an architect places at my disposal. It feels similar to having a patron. My architectural practice has indulged me with a network of likeminded people interested in the arts, supplies materials and time off work to indulge in my passion for painting.

Archaeology

Another important theme in my painting is that of the ancient monuments of archaic Ireland. My Newgrange paintings capture one of the great monuments of early Ireland and particularly the 5,200 year old passage tomb. These paintings also afford me the opportunity to frequent the use of 'light'. The way light enters into the tomb at the Winter Solstice is a dramatic and powerful source of inspiration.

Portraits

For me it's not so much about the portrait as it is about the story, there has to be a story, I just love to indulge in telling a story through the medium of painting, I see the subjects as characters in a play , and generally try to place them on the stage in the defining scene where by most viewers of the painting might smile not only in recognition of the person but of the person in a self-defining role, setting or location, surrounded by people or "stuff" which is an intrinsic part of their lives.

Landscape

For me Its never just about a landscape painting, I am trying to paint a feeling, that I experience when I become part of a location ," a feeling that comes over me to stay for ever more". One of my favourite series of Paintings is of the North Mayo coastline "Aerog" an acrylic 1200 x1200 depictis Downpatrik Head.

mythology

Like the Renaissance Artists of Fifteenth Century Florence, I am inspired to paint the mythological. My particular interest is the often forgotten mythologies of the Irish tradition and particularly the Lebor Gabala - the book of invasions and indeed that other theme of the mythological Cycle of Irish Myths, exile.

Comissions

Let me state publicly here that I love painting and that I am open to being invited to do any particular painting, on any particular subject, the only rule , no interference in the art. I don't get asked enough, but perhaps that will change now with my website going live.

constructs

Constructs are where I make a model or a 3-dimensional version of a painting from a series, out of materials which form a construct or structure which is representative of the series and is intended to give a visually challenged person an idea of what I am trying to say in my paintings.

More and more my paintings are becoming highly texturized. I want that people can also touch and feel them.
